LAHORE: Founder of Ajoka theatre and acclaimed artist Madeeha Gauhar on Wednesday passed away after prolonged battle with cancer.
The actor and activist was renowned for her efforts to bring social change via theatre and promote a more peaceful and friendly culture between Pakistan and India.
To this end, the deceased established the Ajoka theatre in 1984 and collaborated with artists from across the border to help ease tensions between the two countries through art.
Ajoka, through its play, has highlighted issues ranging from human rights to women rights and honour killings among others.
The theatre has also performed in various countries across the world including the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Norway and Hong Kong.
People took to Twitter to pay homage to the deceased artist.
