Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concerns over Pakistan’s agricultural decline during a recent meeting. He noted that while the world has advanced in agriculture, Pakistan has wasted valuable time. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to modernize national agricultural policies to meet current demands.
Sharif mentioned that Pakistan was once self-sufficient in crops like cotton and wheat. However, he stated that the country’s wheat yield per acre is now lower than that of developed countries. He highlighted the potential of Pakistan’s fertile land, skilled agricultural experts, and hardworking farmers.
During the meeting, participants called for comprehensive reforms and science-based strategies to boost agricultural development. They also discussed improving access to smartphones and the internet in rural areas as part of agricultural digitization. Suggestions included creating a central database for farmers and using blockchain and QR code systems for delivering agricultural inputs.
To expedite these changes, PM Sharif directed the formation of working committees. He urged them to submit actionable recommendations within two weeks. This strategic approach aims to harness existing opportunities and elevate Pakistan’s agricultural sector to a competitive level.
