The Sindh Assembly committee has approved a major increase in the salaries and allowances of provincial lawmakers, boosting their monthly pay from Rs150,000 to Rs430,000. The move reflects a rise of nearly 200 percent.
The 18-member committee, chaired by Speaker Owais Qadir Shah, reviewed compensation packages in other provinces. Lawmaker Imtiaz Shaikh said Sindh legislators’ salaries were lower than other assemblies and needed adjustment to bring them closer to national standards.
For comparison, Punjab Assembly members currently receive around Rs500,000 per month in combined salaries and allowances. The Sindh committee also proposed increases in annual allowances and daily session payments for legislators, ensuring better overall compensation.
Alongside basic pay, the committee is preparing a separate proposal to revise the salaries and perks of the chief minister, speaker, deputy speaker, ministers, opposition leader, and parliamentary secretaries through new legislation.
The meeting included Law Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and members from major parties, including PPP, MQM, JI, and PTI-backed legislators. The assembly had earlier passed a bill to increase members’ salaries and privileges, already cleared by the provincial cabinet.
Under the new law, all lawmakers—government and opposition—will enjoy equal privileges. These include hospitality, house rent, utilities, travel allowances, office maintenance, and medical facilities. Opposition leaders now receive perks equal to provincial ministers, while committee chairpersons can use official vehicles with fuel and maintenance, returning them within three days of leaving the post.
